Here is a picture of my first weathered hopper. I used chalks, what do you think? Any tips for added realism? What are some techniques you use for weathering. I really enjoy this part of the hobby and would like to learn all I could.

Nice first effort, Steve. Here are a couple of suggestions: 1) pop out the simulated coal load before you weather; 2) get a small box of artists chalks, scrapw some onto a surface, then dry brush downwrds to give a rain/soot wash effect. Perhaps even try grinding up a piece of charcoal and stippling some of the dust at the top edges of your hopper.
Looks good. A coal hopper is a good starting point. I really don’t think it’s possible to overdue these . Most pics. of the prototypes in use show heavy weathering.
I’ve used chalks weathering autos but have had good luck using an airbrush. Basically just stick to a few colors. Grimy Black, Earth, and some Brown tones to represent rust. I find any form a weathering really pops out the details. Especially on a black car or steamer.
