Pictures from a rare coal movement.

With the softening economy, the Lake Superior Railroad Museum and the North Shore Scenic Railroad have been storing cars for the last few years. This we had about 1222 online. We have just begun the process of bringing them off of our 26 mile railroad and back to the BNSF. Here are some pictures from this Jan, last Nov, and 2 years ago. Hope you enjoy! So far the power for these moves has been SD18-GP30, SD18-SDM-GP30, SDM-GP30, SDM, SDM-F9A. (SD-M is a rebuilt DM&IR SD18)

I will start off with my favorite picture I have taken, of the first train of the year on Jan 29th. Please read the caption [oX)]

Ken Swenson, the Foreman of the Lakefront Line, had just gotten done flagging.

These next two feature Kale Mcconnell, occasionally on here as nssr9169, as conductor on his first coal trains. the captions explain more, but he did a great job.

The last three are of Tim Schandel, Operations Manager on the NSSR. Tim took the time to answer all my emails when I was 12, let me volunteer washing windows when I was 13, and has been a mentor to me all the way up to my current ripe age of 18.

Interesting - thanks for sharing.

Of particular note is the platform affixed to the ladder (last three pix) - gotta be much easier to stand on for those lengthy pushes…

Max- Where on the line do you store them?

Platform was the first thing I noticed…hope there are no close clearances to be encountered.

Murph, at Marbles Siding just outside of Two Harbors there are 2 cuts, and since the bridge at Knife River is being repaired, we store them from there to about MP 8. Thats about 10-12 solid miles of cars when they were all there.

The reason the platform was made is because after we filled up Palmers Siding, MP 16.5, there is no where to run around the power. Someone had to ride 15 miles on the side of the car some trips! Obviously there are no close clearances on the mainline.
