Does anyone have pictures of intermodal yards or knows what issue of Model Railroad magazine would have them.
Hi baron9
In its simplest form an inter modal yard can be done with two sidings with wide spacing.
The tracks are embeded in bitumen you have an office and crib room for the yard staff, and a yard entrance and the trucks
As far as yard equipment goes you need a big forklift to take road railers off the track and a container stacker to unload containers.
You need enough room between the tracks to get a truck and the machiens between the tracks so trains can be unloaded and an area somewhere in the yard to stack containers.
This could be a yard unto its self or could be part of a much larger general yard
I can’t find or remember which model railroader described a yard of this simple type, but not needing a traditional type of container crane makes it a lot easier to place on a layout.

“Intermodal” is a pretty broad description. It goes back to the early days of TOFC (trailer on flat car) and continues to today’s modern container operations. What era is your layout in, and are you looking for a large facility or just a small operation?
Some years back, Heljan made an operating container terminal kit. MSRP was $750, but they were significantly discounted after they went out of production and they were clearance-priced. They are kind of rare now, but there are YouTube videos you can watch. This one combines the Heljan crane with some Faller Car System trucks and, of course, trains, to provide a fully operational terminal scene:
