These numbers do not add up as well as I would like.
50 va divided by 3 amps gives only 16.666 volts available.
Also, the VA rating is the primary side of the power pack, not what is available on the secondary, therefore the voltage of 16.666 could be less when drawing 3 amps.
I personally feel that the newer engines with electronics need more than 20 volts to operate properly when pulling many cars with a pair of SD-45’s.
Indoors with R1 curves, this supply will work great, but outdoors on my RR I need a lot more power.
Bridgewerks makes transformers that range in power from 3 to 30 amps depending on one’s needs . The Mini Mag is an attempt to give the modeller who doesn’t require a larger power supply an economical way to replace a starter set transformer with a higher quality power source.
