When did it start being spelled that way? I don’t recall it ever being anything but ‘Piraeus’ in English.

I thought it was Piraeus as well, “Where worn-out ships go to die.”

I performed a Web search for “Piraesus”, and it turned up a link to a discussion of the Piraesus Rail Museum. As a matter of a citation, here is the link
