Planning first HO layout industry

HI FOLKS: Am planning an HO layout industry and need some help. Walthers made an HO structure kit: R.J. Frost Ice & Storage; an oldie. Was wondering if anyone knows where one of these may be located? OR, maybe someone has seen a similar type structure kit in a Walthers catalog; could post the stock number. Need an almost-windowless, concrete warehouse-type cold storage structure as basis of main building. Frost kit comes reasonably close. If no luck on this, will resort to kitbash of building I already have or will scratchbuild. TTFN…Old Tom aka papasmurf in NH

papasmurf,

Have you tried ebay? I have set up a saved search for some out of date items and had some success finding them. (Not always won them though.)

I know several companies make modular parts, but I can’t remember any that weren’t brick. You could check the various manufacturers.

If you are after a poured concrete wall, I’d think a sheet of styrene would lend itself well to scratchbuilding. If you need a piece larger than normal hobby sizes, try your local sign shop. Mine has up to 4x8 sheets (maybe larger) that he could cut something out for you.

If you are looking for a concrete block wall, I think both Micro-Mark, Walthers and probably others have block sheets.

Good luck,

Richard

Seems to me a building that looks alot like the Walthers Frost kit would be among the easier scratchbuilding jobs using plain styrene. Even strathmore board would be a workable product to capture that look.

Alpine Models Beekins storage structure has something of the lines you are looking for

Although it is also out of stock filling the window openings of the Walthers Red Wing Milling structure would also come close:

Don’t forget that many cold storage structures were also brick. A big cold storage warehouse in Milwaukee was mostly brick (painted). In some ways the Reliable Warehouse and Storage would come close if the windows were bricked up – and often that is what the prototype looks like. Walthers sells sheets of brick.

Indeed many of the Walthers brick structures, if enough windows were bricked up, would fit the bill, as would something crafted from their Modulars series

I’d also explore the possibility of using their shallow front Arrowhead Ale, again possibly filling in some or all window openings.
