Hi all, I’m planning to visit the Roanoke area on Memorial weekend & have some questions. Of course, we’re going to the VA Transportation & Winston Link museums. Wanted to stay at the Hotel Roanoke but the Train Lovers special is not offered that weekend. Considering the Holiday Inn about a half mile or so away from the museum. Is that an OK area of town? Is there parking at the museum? Any good train stores nearby? Any other train related sites close by? Thanks!
O. Winston Link Museum is a must [the old Depot]. After riding around the various shops across the Interstate, travel west on the street beside the tracks. It will take you by a massive switching yard and some shops. If you go under the big set of tracks, turn left and find a deadend back street. You can see the yard and shops from the hill.
Just keep following tracks east, west and south.
Try and stay at the Hotel Roanoke. Its expensive but worth it. Very convinient, nice staff. Ask to get the breakfrast buffet included in your stay. Great Breakfast.
And don’t forget a camera … extra memory chip for a digital or plenty of film … believe it or not some do forget it at the last minute … the camera .
Thanks for the suggestions! Chief…I’ll definitely try to find the Yard!
