I recently completed a building(ADM Grain). I put the doors in without painting them[banghead]. I was woundering if I could remove the doors so I could paint them. I used the Testors liguid cement. The ingrediant is Methyl Ethyl Ketone.I really what to paint them so I would appreciate any help.
I would suggest painting them without removing them. Testor’s glue works by melting the pieces together. Taking them apart is rough if you glued them in solid.
I’m not familiar with the kit, but why can’t you paint them in place? A small paintbrush with a small amount of paint can do a great job.
If your fingers are a bit twitchy and you can’t paint a clean, straight line, or your eyes won’t focus very well on small details like that, get yourself a roll of blue painter’s tape at the hardware store. Use it to mask off the area around the door, and then paint the door. When you pull the tape off, the door will have a clean painted edge. (That’s why you want to use this particular blue tape. Other tapes will also take off the paint below them when you pull them off. Painter’s tape comes off clean.)
I bought some 1/4" masking tape that is really useful for this kind of fine masking.
Also, my recent experience in scratchbuilding suggests that in some instances a bit of finger pressure can make a cemented in window or door pop even where I flooded the area with liquid plastic cement.
First I’m 13 years old so I have no issues about seeing/steady hand. Also I’m in N scale and the doors are about 1/2 inch high and a 1/4 inch wide. Also the doors are not flush with the outside wall. There is about an 1/8 of an inch between the door surface and the wall.
If plastic cement is applied properly the final bond will be just as strong as the molded plastic. I don’t recommend trying to remove the piece. Even if you get it out without breaking it, you’ll have rough edges where it was glued and both the door and the wall it was glued to will most likely need to be sanded to fit properly again.
I’ll echo what others have said. Mask off the area and paint it while it’s in there.
Tim, you’re lucky!! If the doors are recessed, put a piece of the blue masking tape over the whole door (at least 3/4" wide). Press it firmly and use the outline of the door (it should telegraph through the masking tape) to cut out the tape with a NEW #11 exacto. You should be able to paint the door & then remove the tape.
