I want to built a platform (9x13) in my garage for my “O” guage layout and need to know about pully/hoist systems .
Can someone provide a point of contact or how to install a hoist.
Thanks,
Bob

It is simple physics. The weight of the layout has to be counterbalanced by a weight of equal proportion in which case you can rasie and lower it with ease. Same idea as the springs on your garage door. With a layout there are several easy ways to do this. Just attach cables to the layout at several lifting points, take them over pulleys so they turns horizontal to the ceiling and a second pulley at the wall so the cables come down the wall. Now attach weights to the end of the cables until it is balances and you are done. What type of weights? Coffes cans filled with pieces of metal or concrete blocks or almost anything you can think of. Also you can make the cable attach to the railroad so you can remove them while you run trains. Just think through the garage bit. they are dirty, have no heat or cooling and the railroad definitely needs to clear the garage door.
thanks,
I live in San Diego and except for some ash from the fires, I keep a clean garage - and we have a moderate climate year around !!!
