I have three Riavarossi FEF-3 engines now. Nice running and happy with them. Under the sandbox is a decoder plug, and I would like to know if anyone has a small enough decoder that will directly plug into there…and be able to shut the sandbox back up again.

According to the MR Jan 2004 review"A decorder socket is located under the combined steam and sand dome, which is removable. For actural decoder install, it’s best to
remove the boiler. It’s detailed in the manufacturers illustrated instruction sheet".
However you must disconnect the three metal pipes from the feedwater heater atop the smokebox and metal reverse gear rod from the right front of the cab etc, etc. It’s
tricky, best to read the MR comments.

I’ve been their and the FEF-3 is still in pieces. Saying that, it’s not because I can’t figure out the reassembly it’s because there is a fault with the system , which fried a decoder. Until I can locate the fault I won’t put it together again. A digitrax HD123 will fit in behind the can but you will need a 4" harness, which is available at Loy’s. TCS ( www.tcsdcc.com ) makes a very small HO decoder which might fit “under the hood”.
