plumbing problems

A question for all you experienced modelers out there…

I had a plumbing problem in my basement a few weeks ago that caused a pipe to leak. fortunately it didn’t come close to my layout[:)]. has a pipe leaked over your layout (or something similar) and caused any damage?

September 2005, hurricane Rita tore part of my roof off and the rain poured in on my layout. I had to redo some scenery and the backdrop as well as replace one turnout. It could have been much worse.

Our previous club layout was in the basement of a store and pizza shop. The recessed step entry to the store used to leak water on the layout during rains and snow. Even though we placed plastic across the floor joists, the old brass track was weathered to a wonderful green. The bathroom in the pizza shop used to overflow from time to time and soak another portion of the layout. We are so happy to be in our own 10,000sq’ building now. Now if the roof holds up we’ll be doing fine.

Joe Fugate had a flood from a broken water main, which he reported on here a while back. The layout surface didn’t get wet, but there were several inches of water on the floor.

So far, I’ve been lucky.

We recently had a very minor sewer problem but we wern’t concerned as we have full replacement coverage on our home with a $500 deductible. Or so we thought. The infamous fine print said that there was a Dollar limit on sewer problems. The limit can be raised but they arbitrarily place a limit unless you ask for more.

This ia appearently soley related to sewer problems.

You might want to check your policy.

Been there, Done that… September 2000. Only this didn’t come from the top. It came from the bottom when every basement in the area flooded due to a malfunction at the pumping stations. With all the humidity this threw into the air, just about everything with any exposed content rusted. Fortunately, the only loss was stuff I needed to toss in the trash anyway.

A ROCK solid reason NOT to carpet a basement. Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen anybody do.

It’s called flooding. Most policies don’t cover it unless you have actual flood insurance. Good luck to anyone it happens to.

i retired in august of 1999. one month later hurricane floyd showed up with 14 inches of rain in just a few hours. my driveway drain couldn’t handle that amount of water and it backed up into my garage and then into my ramily room. my layout was 35 inches off the floor and just as i began pumping out the water the power went off for about 20 hours. fortunatly the water went out my patio door so i only got 2 inches of water but my pergo floor was ruined. insurance covered it in full. but since my family room is very cool there was a lot of condensation that settled on everything on the layout. i ran a dehumidifier for several days continuiously for a week to take care of that. no damage to the layout.

I was in a local club with a layout in the basement of a town owned building. This was an old building and the foundation had always leaked. We fond this fact out after a large part of the layout was up. There was a ditch formed in the concrete floor around the perimeter of the room that was to carry the water away. Now that was a good idea NOT!! Dampness was a constant problem.
