Sounds like Beeching all over again.
This is the only way a railroad is going to survive in a country that has switched from socialism to capitalism. Socialists keep useless pieces of infrastructure because it makes the socialists appear on paper as if they are growing the economy. Kind of like in the U.S. with government regulations dictating to the railroads which portions must be kept, ignoring the losses. The American government is socialist and has been for about 100 years. Eastern European countries are trying to attain what America once was while Americans are trying to become what Eastern Europe is trying to escape.
Does PKP have a branch line to the Katyn Forest?
had the honor of operating steam in '08. a memory i won’t forget. all passenger runs. got real luck. never spun the drivers when opening up the throttle leaving the station. the brakes where another thing

Gez Jerry!
Are you interested in railroads, or are you just using this column to express your extreme views?
Joe
ironic isn’t it Jeff Guse. sad but basically accurate.

Bingo mr Guse
You are basically correct Jeff, while it is sad to loose that much railroad, it is important to remember that the economics of trains is geared for high volume traffic. At least in this case, they have the wisdom to retain the rights of way. Arguably too many lines in this country were permanently abandoned that we could really use these days.
Think Katyn is in Russia near Smolensk - remember the plane crash a few years ago [2007?] that killed many high members of Polish leadership on their way to Katyn for a memorial service?
Awhile back Jeffry made comments about the rail yard in Worcester Mass and tight driving angles in a rig so I gather you are a truck driver. They built a brand new yard with full access but you never read about it and instead dumped on the railroad instead. Now in the US there is no regulations that prevent any railroad from abandoning any route or trackage that they want to. All they have to do is give a public notice. What the railroads learned after the mass abandonments of the 1980’s is what sounds good and looks good on paper today may not be that good later on. The end result is some very long detour routes in case of accidents or storms. Now the US railreoads look to see if they can have a small independant take over the route and partner with them. That is not socialist but rather good business but you don’t get it at all.
Standard Jeffery rant # 10
Why doesn’t Mr Guse apply his rants towards other modes of travel? Hoe about that heavily subsidised air service in Montana whereas many flights are flown with NOBODY and still get a fat subsidy. What do you have to say about this , Jeffy Boy?

Don’t know the gent who is Jeffery Guse, but he does have t right. Downsizing of the Polish Rail system, as well as getting rid of the steam operations, is long overdue. And Katyń forest was in Poland before WW2. (the Russian land grab took it away?
