I received my catalogue from Lionel today (2007, volume 2). I am interested in expanding my collection of Polar Express rolling stock and would like to purchase the new disappearing hobo car. However, the catalogue has a word bubble stating “Ships January!” This doesn’t make any sense. Is this still the case? Wouldn’t it make more sense to release this car before Christmas? Great marketing, Lionel.
well the latest update from the Lionel website shipping schedule state this item to be ship in October so maybe it will show up before Christmas
That sure is a cool car - still thinking about it though since I preordered the Hogwarts express that is set to come out this month too…
Lionel is always updating their shipping schedule. Though lower end starter items don’t get delayed the way some of the higher end items do (I won’t mention Legacy), it’s still good to check. Lionel had this problem with the original release of the Polar Express set, where they didn’t make enough and they came in late. When it appeared that Lionel had a BIG hit with this set, they couldn’t meet the demand before CHRISTmas of that year. Of course, that gave some dealers a good reason to jack up the set price and try to make a little more money.
Likewise, nearly all of the K-Lionel items have also been pushed back on the shipping schedule. The MR and WP S-2 Alco Switchers were slated to be available back in May. I think they’re scheduled now for October or November. Nearly all of the Volume One 2007 K-Line by Lionel items got pushed back, probably so as not to compete as much with the regular Lionel items.
Just as logical, while Lionel announced the Volume Two 2007 K-Line by Lionel catalog a couple months ago, most of those items will not begin showing up on the US mainland until March 2008… and that date too I suppose is subject to change.
For anyone interested, the Disappearing Hobo car is out.
A good friend of mine bought me the Polar Express set the for Christmas the first year that it came out and I’v e been adding the cars that have been issued every year since. Tomorrow I will be going to my local train shop to pick up the Hobo car.
I have since purchased several Lionel sets and am getting more and more into the hobby.
I am new to these boards and am looking forward to being a part of them. This looks like a great place!

Joe it always starts out with just one set, then you buy more cars than a loco or two, then you start checking the toy depatment and shelfs at the dollar stores and wallmart to see if you can find any automobiles or other scenery items cheap[:D]
We had one batch of the hobo car come in and they all went to cover pre-orders. We’ve been waiting on a second order for several weeks now.
I bought one last week from my local train store (N.Smith, Broomal, PA). It was their second shipment, and they were selling fast. Joe
I just finished setting my Polar Express set and my Christmas set for under the Christmas tree that we should be getting this week. It’s begining to look a lot like Christmas!
Can’t wait to pick up the Hobo car tomorrow!
