I have just started using Polly S paint after years of using Floquil. I just painted a brick building and was wondering how long I should wait before trying to rub in mortar (putty) or apply any weathering? Is India Ink/alcohol safe to use on Polly S?

Some people say as little as 20 minutes. I usually wait at least an hour or two. The alchohol is going to be a solvent for the Polly-S, so it depends on how lightly you apply it and what effects you are looking for. I would use a Polly-S color appropriate for your mortar and thin it with water if you think you need to. I’d also try putting it on a small section full-strength and then almost immediately wiping it off the top of the bricks. Practice on the back of the building. [:)]
As far as applying your mortar goes, I’d give the paint overnight to thoroughly cure before starting. That’ll minimize the chance of damaging the paint when you wipe off the excess mortar.
Polly Scale (Polly S hasn’t been available for years) paint is thinnable with alcohol, but will not be harmed by the common weathering wash of india ink and 70& alcohol (common rubbing alcohol) once the paint has dried for a few hours. 70% alcohol is also a viable thinner for Polly Scale and other acrylics, but isn’t so good as a remover for cured paint. The same can be said of the other thinners for acrylics - water, Polly S airbru***hinner (they retained the old name for that product, don’t ask me why…), and automotive windshield washer fluid.
Most acrylics can be removed by soaking in 90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol (also known as isopropanol) for a few hours.
Thanks for tip on the India Ink. What I found was the wood putty I am using for mortar will remove Polly S even after 3 days drying time so I sprayed it with Floquil gloss and applied the putty after 24 hrs, no problem. Now I am at the weathering and detailing stage.
