Hello everyone! Has anyone had problems with Polly Scale water base paint not sticking to spray can primer? The primer was purchased at Canadian Tire and says on the can that it was manufactured in the USA. The Polly scale has worked just fine on other items (structures etc.) The primer was applied to a wood Juneco caboose kit. The Polly scale comes off the primer with no effort. Even picking the caboose up with latex gloves will disturb the paint. I tried to apply dry transfer lettering to the caboose but the lettering just pulled the paint off the primer. Is there perhaps something wrong with the Polly Scale paint or did I mess up using cheap primer? I am going to strip all the paint off the kit and start over. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Dave
some primers require sanding before painting. This gives a smooth surface and a surface that paint can adhere to. Try sanding the primer with 220 grit paper and try the painting again.
I paint a lot of white metal figures using Polly Scale acrylics and Model Master Acryls.
I use Testors Model Master primers (white and gray) and have never had trouble with paint peeling. I think the key is to make sure your primer is completely dry first. Even though the primer is “dry” to the touch after a couple of hours, I allow 72 hours between priming and painting.
For wood, on the other hand, while I use the same paints, I use Liquitex wood sealer to prime the model.
It sounds like it may be inferior primer, or it has something volatile in it that interferes with the bonding of the paint.
