poly fiber

I recently watched the PBS TV show “Tracks Ahead”, the one gentleman was making trees with poly fiber and scenic foam. He would pull apart the poly fiber and then roll it in his hands, spray it with hairspray, then drop it into a bucket with the scenic foam. My question is where can I buy poly fiber? For the lack of a better term, it’s like a big clump of hair in a bag, just pull apart what you need. Anyone know where I can get it…thx…tom.

Try your neighborhood craft stores. They should have it.

If you want a cheap source of colored Polyfiber go to my webpage on faux fur grass, I found a dye for synthetics called Dye-na-flow. You can then buy the cheap white quilt batting and dye it.

You can also make better bushes by using fake fur and painting them with green acrylic paint. It stiffens the hair fibers and just needs a sprinkle of ground foam to make realistic bushes. Just feather the hair fibers out to make a bushy framework.

Harold,

Nice site/pictures

Poly fiber or polyfil is sold at craft and fabric stores. I learned to do it the way that you saw on the show. But I was taught to dye the polyfiber black with Rit dye (unless you can find it pre-dyed). Let it dry thoughly. Then I scrunch it tight, hold it with a clothespin and spray it with super adhesive. Then toss it with the ground foam. This is how one of the local HO modular groups does it.
