Poor rear truck pickup P2K SW8

Hello all.

Just wondered if anyone else is having problems with P2K’s SW8? The rear truck (featuring traction tires on one axle) is atrocious as far as electrical pickup goes. I’m using dead frog (custom-line) turnouts and thought this might be half the problem, but I’m noticing now that there seems to be something wrong even on regular track sections.

I’d like some feedback before I contact the shop from which I purchased the unit in January if anyone can help.

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

I recall reading here, early last year, that most pickup through the wheels is right at the crook of the flange-running surface interface. That is where the rail meets the wheels most often. Is it possible that your wheels, particularly the rubberized ones, are not in gauge? Maybe they are too close to each other for the rail to do anthing but run against the rubber.

Just a thought. Otherwise, sorry, cant help.

Good thought. I’ll check it out next time I’m at the LHS.

Cheers,

Glenn

Don’t know how the SW8’s rear truck is put together but I got an SD45T-2 who’s front truck is in two pieces and paint had gotten in the joint between the two. The control board is wired to the top piece of the truck. For some reason the rear truck in not wired. The contact was sporatic and unreliable and a lot of fun to diagnosis.
If the SW8’s truck is built the same, it might be worth a check.

That’s another option to explore as well. Shame at over $300 CDN it can’t work properly out of the box.

Thanks for the tip,

Glenn
