some of you may have seen of my signature of PH&D alco S2 #52, and now i am ready to start to paint an alco in PH&D paint, so my question to everyone is what floquil colors will match the closest?
oscale- The only suggestion I would have is to see if Floquil has a website that might provide a paint chip color chart. As you have seen the real thing, you would have a much better idea of what colors look close.
BTW, great shot of the ALCo! My wife and I spent a few days in Pt Huron in Sept, we really enjoyed the sights, the boats, and that hobby shop (Dan’s?) on the north side of town. Where does the PH&D operate in your town? We plan to head back that way, and a few pics of their equipment would just add to our enjoyment!
Thanks, oscale.
The PH and D is long gone. Part of the CSX empire.
Go here for a good article on the PH and D.

hobo- I should have known that, guess I was just thinking wishfully.
I picked up a copy of North American Shortlines a few weeks back, but I haven’t had a chance to look it over. Guess I’d better make the time!
Too bad, that’s a good looking diesel.
Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out.
Not knowing how many good color pics you have, research the link for additional pics for color referencing.
In the pic the main body color appears to be a very dark blue. If this is blue, not black, Floequil dark blue, not as dark as B&O/ C&O enchantment. the enchantment is almost impossible to find. I have been collecting those old paints for paint jobs in B&O and the blue on the Chessie scheme.
The yellow looks like Railbox yellow, but add some(drops) of orange to deepen
The color of the top? platinum mist with blue?, or solid light blue? - can’t tell.
the PH&D closed up shop in the 80’s i know the former owner of the PH&D and i have a book about how to model it so, #52 has the most documentation on it makeing it easy to paint and detail.
the picture i found is on http://www.railroadmichigan.com/porthurondetroit.html when i first found this picture i knew i wanted to paint one like this.
i have never seen a PH&D alco allthough aperently the big south fork senic railway in sterns kentucky runs a former PH&D unfortunatly it is now in a tan and brown paint [:(]
the hobby store in town is called pastime hobbies and is the only one in town anymore.
for a peice of history about Port Huron Thomas Edison grew up in Port Huron and sold news papers for a number of years on the train to detroit.
From some of the additional pics in the link, you can use a variety of the dark blue. I find that I have trouble w/ dark blues for doing B&O and C&O. Scalecoat II has a decent dark blue, not sure if is SF freight on the bottle or just dark blue. Floequil’s dark blue is very close. If you do ever find Enchantment, I believe you’ll find it too dark- just send it to me…
A closer look at the gray, and with weathering in pics, you could use CSX or EL. Harbor gray may be too dark and need to be lightened.
The Scalecoat will dry with a bit of gloss and be ready for decals, however you may just find that a glosscoat or Future Floor finish may be needed if other Floequil (flat) paints are used.
Good luck and happy painting.
thanks.
now, who make a good alco S2
Assuming HO, look no further than our good friends at Atlas. Their S-2 (made by Roco) has been one of the best running (and darn good looking) locomotives on the market for the past two decades (almost).
Edit: seems like maybe the most recent release(s) of these may have been mfg’d in China instead of Austria. Even if this is the case, I still think one will be a top notch performer for you.
