Port settlement promises flood of rail traffic
Hanjin plans to depart Portland Oregon completely forcing shippers to Tacoma and Seattle. Look for increased truck traffic on I-5 and some business to go bust or relocate.
Unfortunately for the Port of Portland (Oregon), the damage is already done. Portland’s Terminal 6 had only one major customer, Hanjin; but they will leave Portland on March 9, and will not return. Over the last few years, work slowdowns, sick-outs, etc. by the ILWU have caused such long delays loading and unloading ships at Terminal 6 that Hanjin has decided to use other ports to handle this business. Hundreds of Portland-area jobs are gone for good…
NPR is reporting that the west coast will lose volume as a result of this action. The ILWU was very short sighted. They killed the goose that was laying the golden eggs.
