Apparently Google Maps is more accurate than the article. Along with all the road geek web sites. US99W does not exist and has not existed ever since I-5 was finished. Try SR5W and see how that meshes with current maps.

Putting a rail line down the middle of the street is a really bright idea. Solve the congestion problem by eliminating at least 3 as many as 4 lanes of traffic. Never mind that 95% of that traffic is probably originating or terminating at a location other than what is served by a light rail line. Of course, as always, big government in Washington will force everybody not using it and receiving no benefit from it, to pay for it.

Jeffery Guse, your comment is contradictory. Using your own comment, those not using the transit lines will greatly benefit from the line. “Solve the congestion problem by eliminating at least 3 as many as 4 lanes of traffic.” That’s a major congestion reduction that non-users can benefit from.

I wouldn’t mind paying a bit more in taxes for complementary infrastructure to reduce the amount of road traffic.

Jeffery: I don’t know what your computer told you, but the road is physically signed, and known locally as, 99W.

Oregon State Route 99W (not US Route 99W) runs from Tigard south. I drove it two years ago from Tigard to McMinnville, OR.
So, both Messrs. Guse and Henderson are correct.
The 99W parallels the Portland & Western to Salem. Although, I don’t think P&W operates south of McMinnville. Very scenic.

As usual the goose is pontificating on matters of which he knows very little. I am sort of tired of some Illinois guy thinking he knows anything about our local needs in Oregon. It is 99W, has been as long as I have lived here ( 40 years ) , I - 5 not withstanding. Something is needed for this major corridor, transit-wise. Doesn’t have to be light rail in my book. And yes, there is an existing rail right of way so no need to " steal " a lane, as the local nay-sayers would have it in their ads.

Google maps has 99W clearly labeled as does Rand McNally road atlas.

Let the voters decide. Rt 99W is the Pacific Highway IIRC. It has been a long time since that was US99W. 1960’s or earlier I think since I-5 opened. It may still carry the US Route on FHWA maps as it is an STAA route.

It seems the NIMBYS are at it already. Don’t end it at Tualatin; run it to McMinnville; the tracks are there, all they need is some upgrading and they can handle DMUs or string some wire and they can handle the MAX trains.

The P&W runs south of McMinnville to Corvallis and Albany and to Monroe.

Portland & Western runs as far south as Eugene on the old Oregon Electric/BN/BNSF line closely paralleling hwy 99W (just 99 south of Junction City.

Not sure what Google Maps you all are using back in the Midwest/South, but Highway 99 does exactly what all the Oregon commentators have stated - in fact, the signage here in Eugene is 99N. 99W runs on the other side of the valley from I-5 - it’s 99E that joins/parallels I-5. And P&W definitely ends in Eugene, as I see their office and engines every day when I go to and from work.
