The superelevation being discussed is on the A&WP, which already has superelevation on its curves, like every other mainline in the country. Probably just routine maintenance. There has been trackwork and curfews, just like every other year. I don’t believe that the work required to raise the speed on the CPKC/CSX Meridian - Montgomery route has even begun.
What prospective Amtrak train are you talking about?
My understanding was that there was increased superelevation, which certainly might be a misinterpretation.
The ‘new’ Amtrak service was initially promoted as DFW to Meridian by way of Shreveport, but it came to be pointed out that the train would more likely run to Atlanta than stop at Meridian and interchange passengers with the Crescent. As the Crescent route is already congested between Meridian and Atlanta, adding additional passenger trains there would be difficult – however, a different route between those cities, even if longer, might have advantages.
Or at least would in a second Biden administration. I do not know whether either the Dallas-Meridian train or its extension are still serious priorities.
It was working Talladega until this past Saturday 7-19-25, but CSX has changed its routing to Baldwin-Waycross-Manchester-LaGrange-Gabbettville-Montgomery-Birmingham-Nashville. It’s no longer wyeing itself in LaGrange and taking the Lineville sub north from there.
On my stretch of the A&WP before this spring the was no superelevation on any of the curves., The way CSX installed it was to run a tamper then another tamper then a machine that settled the track and then one more tamper.. It was quite an elephant walk.
What part of the A&WP are you located on? I find it hard to believe that there was no super elevation on the main line curves of where you are located. The sidings may not of had it, but the main line certainly should have had super elevation in place years ago.
Looking at my copy of the 2005 Atlanta Division employee timetable track speed on the A&WP from Stonewall XXB 16.4 to Coosa Street Montgomery XXB 175.5 is nominally 50 MPH with a number of intermediate locations with lower speed limits.
I feature that there is superelevation in all the curves, though not as much as there was when passenger service was being operated over the territory.
LaGrange and north. Southbound - Thursday the CPKC connection train had 2 very dirty KCS locos unable to even read their numbers. Then 24 wells all with Schneider except 3 with frame mounted cryogenic but too fast to read placards. Then mixed freight cement cars, grain, tank car dot 111 or 117??. No Tilx,
Wednesday 18 wells with all Schneider then mixed freight with Tilx not together. For the last few days has been running later around 2000h.
The turnout of our siding has a lot of equipment staged for some kind of work. New ties, containers for some kind of new equipment. The turnout is just north of the end of the curve spiral so unable to even guess what work will be done.
What siding is your turnout on? Those containers might have new crossing equipment, sometimes it’s shipped in those. Have any photos of what you’re describing? The Lineville sub is about to go in an MoW curfew starting 8/17, maybe what you’re seeing is related to that.
Interesting 4 days for the Meridian operation. Friday 8/15 2 CP locos northbound with about 11 schneider wells then the usual mixed freight cars. SAT same locos southbound with about 11 wells. Sunday 2 KCS locos pulling just 2 grain cars no wells. Nore: Before the Meridian arrangement with CP the CSX local did not operate Sat, Sun, holidays. Today 1600h Monday Northbound had 3 CSX locos all working with~~67 all Schneider wells then the usual local mixed freight
Today Tuesday the northbound local was led by 2 KCS units, then 25 wells with all Schneider some wells just a single stack. then the usual mixed freight. It ran about 1 hour earlier than usual probably because it had no TILX sand cars added.
Saturday afternoon’s southbound local was different. Led by a CSX and CP unit. The CP unit as usual was so dirty that could not read its road number. Makes Amtrak’s unwashed cars sparking clean in comparison. Train was about 18 wells all Schneider and that was all. No local traffic.
You know it’s no longer a local train. It’s been a daily manifest train since May of this year. It has been running with the CP 7014 heritage unit last week and this past weekend.
The local still runs with some Schneider. However the last week there have been some other indications that am waiting for further confirmation. Since do not observe every day takes some time. What is needed is someone who can observe to previous M&B route for any trains.
Northbound this afternoon at 1755h 2 KCS locos pulled the Schneider local. Behind locos had 27 wells with a few white containers mixed in. Last 2 or 3 wells cyro frames and tanks on rear. Next the normal hodge podge of various cars including a rather large number of boxcars. Then about 20 auto carriers probably from the Montgomery auto mixing center, then about 24 sand cars (TILX) that originate just north of Montgomery. All and all a healthy consist still running on the local’s slot. Missed the Southbound local by about 2 minutes and saw only empty TILX cars on rear.
