Post Rank?

I posted this question over on the general trains.com forum yesterday and received no answer:

Can someone please explain what ‘Post Rank’ is in a member’s profile? I looked in FAQs but couldn’t find it there.

Thanks

It means you are somewhere on a scale of forum flatulence. Fortunately the wind is blowing here, but when it gets foul the moderator pulls the plug. This is a great site for the interested and the bored and lonely.

Enthusiastically,

Now that there’s funny…

Seriously…

It simply ranks each of us as to the total number of posts we authored when compared to our peers on the forum…if you are ranked #1 then NOBODY else has posted more than you, etc., etc.

For the record, the gals have it all over us guys as Mookie is #1 and Cherokee Woman is #2 and (for what it’s worth) I rank #8.

…Just for the record…There are several “1”'s…Not all ladies.

Prior to July 2006, the forum software extant at the time provided each user with a series of coloured stars under their names. After 50 post or so, maybe it was 100, you got one green star. After 200, you got two green stars…something like that. Once you got up to 3000 posts (I think it was), you had 5 red stars.

It led to confusion and annoyance, and often some not-so-good-natured jabs. When Kalmbach changed over to the current software for the forums, they caved in to the increasingly vocal requests to ditch the star system because the stars suggested seniority and therefore ability and knowledge. In my own case, nothing could have been further from the truth. The post rating that you see is a hold-over, an artefact, of that earlier time that someone just couldn’t live without. Happily, it just means the relative number of total posts, regardless of utility or quality, compared to other users. Think of it as a percentile score. In my case, I rank #1 (I take that on the strength of what other users have claimed…I’ve never looked for it or seen it myself…truth!), but others have the same score. It just means that close to 99% of all other registered users fall below us on the scale.

DURING THE WAR THERE ALL SORTS OF RANKS AT THE POST FROM PRIVATE TO GENERALS., GOLLEE. OR AS GOMER WOULD SAY SHAZAM![yeah][tup Does anyone really care who has the most posts., and what their sex is?

Some people care about others posts and some don’t. Some, like me,like to keep track of our own posts.

…I certainly wouldn’t mind if it was ladies that held down the most posts…Not at all. Not an issue with me at all…

Personally, I kinda like to see the count of how many times I have commented on the forum…I don’t think that’s any big issue one way or the other to make it controversial.

I suppose others {who have been on here a while}, don’t mind seeing {their’s} as well.

I’ve been on here awhile, I think I’ve got a little bit of knowledge (I think), and someday, sometime, it might be in a couple of years, I’m going to break 1,000, if nothing else happens.

If you rank 1# that tells me he has no life or he just retired. [#dots] Sense of humor…

Apparently they have one character for rank and each person has one bit in their character turned on. That’s why the ranks are all powers of 2, ie. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. Since there are 8 bits I guess there are eight groups and your rank is whatever group you fall into. The 0 rank has no bits on and seems to be for newcomers. Don’t know how the group boundaries are set, but they seem to be fluid since I used to be rank 2 and am now rank 4.

Enjoy

It took me til just now to realize that the stars were gone. I remember havin em way back but i hadnt been on enough in the last couple years to notice.

Ive noticed other sites have ranking systems but they dont seem to terrorize the lower posters. I had no idea there was rank harrasment.

They did away with the stars cuz we were catching grief. Now they have #s and we are still catching grief.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe some of us aren’t retired (quite yet), some of us aren’t bored (too busy!) and maybe we are just interested so we ask a lot of questions? What knowledgeable teacher wouldn’t like that!

And I promise I have never, ever terrorized anyone! Always a first, however…

So why do you suppose that I went from a zero to 128 overnight recently?

Posting this so I can check my rank.[zzz]

Right you are M.C., I did not notice there were several “ties” for a specific place…thanks for pointing that out.

…Sorry {Awesome}…wrong on both counts.

I’m a zero. must not be worth anything. I take offense
