Post war engine problem

I sent this in once I thought, but it has not appeared. The Blue Comet I bought a few weeks ago is now making a “growling” noise. I clean the brushes, face plate, the slots, etc, everything that should be cleaned, and it was fine for a bit, but is now making an odd noise. When it does make this noise, it also slows down a bit. Is it the brushes? I could not find replacements. Best Regards, Jake

The brushes if the problem need to be even on the mating surface to the armature, if you see a lot of blue spark inside the motor area when running the brushes are the problem otherwise a complete lubrication of all axle and wheel points is overdue.

Some of my steam engines made a screaching noise while running. I found that if you put a drop of oil on the pin that the armature rides in it stops

Hello Fred! Olsen Toy Train Parts or Dr.Tinker’s should have replacement Brushes for your Engine; They are easy to get. As for your growling noise. Did you oil the Armature Shaft on both ends? Check the Springs on the Brushplate for tightness? Oil the Axles? Check everything again & let us know what happens. Take Care.

I would agree with those that say armature shaft lubrication (both sides) and since you have the oil handy, might as well do the other moving parts like the axles and drive rods…you don’t want to hear “squeeks” after the “growl” goes away.
