I purchased an uncataloged set over the weekend, X686. It has a 1060 w/ tender, 3409 helicopter car, Swifts 9in boxcar, gondola w/ barrells, and cheapie caboose. I don’t have the uncat. set book that was put out a couple of years ago. Can anyone let me know any more info on the set and the book value. I know the market value is different, but I an trying to get a gauge of the value.
The 1060 w tender is very low value; $33.00 in excellant condition. The 3409 helicopter car is worth a lot more; $46 to $100. If it has a 6017 caboose it is very common; $3 to $11.00 in excellant condition, unless it has other numbers after the 6017 it has almost no value. Prices I quoted are found in Greenberg’s pocket price guide.
Other stuff I must have numbers to give you a price quote, also I don’t have the price guide on sets.

Thanks for the info. It is in C-8 condition. It came with the set box, all the instructions, billboards, lock on the original envelope and track. I am trying to find out the history if it was a department store set, etc. I am not familiar with uncataloged sets and was unsure how much to pay at a local auction.
I’ll have a look in my copy of Authoritative Guide to Lionel’s Promotional Outfits 1960-1969 when I get home tonight and let you know what it says.
The no. X-686 (1961 Swift Promotional Outfit, C6-$200, C7-$350, C8-$525, Rarity-R4), introduced the no. 6050-50 Box Car- Red- “Swift”. The Factory Orders for these outfits help to properly date the introduction of the Type IIa 8 1/2 inch box car body. They also validate the Archbar version “-50” of the Swift box car.
Speaking for myself, any Lionel train that survives from the Postwar Era in VG+ to Excellent is priceless to me. [;)]
