posting photos

Hi all , I’m new to the forum and I would like to be able to post photos. I read the advice from Nora that is several years old. Is there an even simpler explanation? Any help would be appreciated , thanks.

You have to plubish or post it to a site like Photo bucket or flicker, then copy the image code to your post or a Word document and then post it here.

I publish to photobucket, then copy the image code to Word Perfect, highlight the entire document along with the photo image code, the right click and cut…then from this forum I click on the clipboard icon, the one with the W on it, hit control then V to insert it in the pop up box that displays, then submit./post

Yes the photo file must exist on some web server that is accessable all the time, which is usually NOT your computer (unless it has a permanent address on the web and it permanently attached thereto).

You can compose your message just using the trains forum editor and you will see two rows (unless you have an unusually wide screen) of icons just above the text entry area. If you hover your mouse over one, (i.e.: just put the mouse arrow on it and stop moving it for a couple of seconds) a “Tool Tip” will appear that names the icon. The left end of the top row has a place to select the font, font size and such. The last icon (usually on the second row) is a “Smiley” face where you can select a smiley icon to add to your text… such as: [8D]

To the left of that icon is an icon for editing an image, and to the left of that one is an icon that looks like a strip of film (or maybe a double-hung window?). Click on the icon and a dialog box will appear where you can type (or better, paste) the web address where the photo exists that you want to add to your posting.

Prepare your text message for a place to put the image by putting the insertion cursor (the blinking verticle line that shows where the next character will appear) on the LEFT edge of the text area on a line by itself… i.e.: press the Enter key at least once at the place where the image is to appear.

Then find your photo on the web (using a different tab or window of your browser) and copy the address of the image to the clipboard (usually you highlight the text from a text box on the photo service page and type Ctrl-C… if all you see on the page is the image, then copy the text from the browser’s address bar) then return to the window/tab where you are composing your message and paste the content of the clipboard (type “Ctrl-V”) into the text box in the dialog box and then click the “Insert” button.

Press Enter again after the

I cannot say simple but a little bit of practice and you can do this.

I use Photo Bucket.

Below is a photo of a Screen shot of a typical Photo Bucket page when I am going to link a photo to any forum. I use the IMG code, the fourth one down on the lower left.

Don’t ever move the photo in Photo Bucket or the link will disappear in any forum you posted the link.

Figure out what Albums you will like in Photo Bucket because with enough photos, you can loose track of where you stored your photos in the Photo Bucket site.

Some folks (like me) do have their own webspace, but doing so does cost money. I also have a personal website, but that’s another story entirely. Any of the photo sites already mentioned will work just fine.

As noted, you need to determine the url. Sometimes I’ll open another window in my web browser and type in the URL for test purposes. Then I just highlight and copy the complete URL, and paste it into my post on the forum.

If you’re an command line commando like myself, (And if you’re not, you can skip the rest of this post) the code for inserting an image into your post follows common forum syntax, where the “tags” are surrounded by , not <> as in HTML. The tags for posting an image are “img” and “/img”. Just type “img” surrounded by the square brackets, insert the URL, the type the closing tag “/img” with the square brackets (and no quotes).

You can do quotes (or break up a quote) by using the “quote” and “/quote” tags. Comes in handy if you want to answer parts of a post separately.

The same is true for inserting “hyperlinks,” where the reader can simply click on the URL and be redirected to the desired site. The tags are “url” and “/url”, again without the quotes and with the square brackets.

I was thinking about how I haven’t used this pic since I made it years ago, and even though I’m a bit late you might get a laugh.

Do any of you guys know if the “new” way of posting photos works yet (i.e., without the IMG tags), or is everybody still using the old way?

I have never tried it. I am not messing with what has worked for me. The IMG method is simple to use and I prefer the KISS principle. Just Copy & Paste.

I use Photo Bucket for emails and different forums I belong to.

So, am I correct in understanding you actually see a photo in the preview using the old method? I sure have not been able to (at least in the recent past)!

Reference your excellent photo of UP 2010 posted eariler, were you able to see the picture in preview mode?

Here is a photo of me in my engine cab…

{Photo lost in a whirl of stupidity of the hosting company! Sorry!}

I copied the URL from my webspace at MyLargeScale, click on the filmstrip icon, pasted the URL into the textbox and clicked “Insert:” button.

The image is visible as I am typing this.

If I click “Preview” (hang on whilst I do so…)

(Thanks for waiting!)

It opened a new tab in my browser and displayed everything I had done, image included, up to the point where I clicked the button.

Semper Vaporo (10-24):

OK, let me try what you did …

Cool! It works!

So, Kalmbach must have fixed whatever was preventing their posting program from working properly with photos.

Thanks.

The test photo above that I tinkered with in response to Semper Vaporo shows a UP westbound (photo leftward) domed passenger special by Etiwanda Ave. in Fontana, CA along the Sunset Route. The photo is dated September 4, 2010. That special train was led by UP 2010, the very engine depicted in your earlier posted photo in this thread!
