When posting pictures to a forum you should upload them as the smallest file format you can. That way you save the most file space on your free servers that you can and in doing so you have more space for more pictures.
I went to check my upload limit and found that my hosting site have removed all limits. So that changes this post a little. Anyways, if you want to save space on your computer, save your picture file in the smallest format. And posting in the smallest format will save MR bandwidth and server space. It will also make your posts easier to see by other readers.
For those wanting to post.
You have to find a pictures hosting site.
Start an account, upload your pictures in the smallest file format size. (this saves you space and bandwidth making it easier to post), link your picture to your post, the direct link works best for me.
Remember that your post stays here, so if you delete the picture readers of your post will not see the picture and may wonder what you are talking about. I have pictures I uploaded when I first posted to the forums here that I have left on my hosting site so others reading my earlier posts can see what was being talked about.
One last thing, will the spelling police please take a break. It has been proven that the human mind can read a completely miss spelled word as long as most of the letters are there.
To avoid derailing the picture thread I’ll post some info here.
Why, would you want to post the smallest, most compressed image you can in a thread where you are trying to display your stuff? That’s rediculous.
The forum auto sizes “large photos” to fit within the forum width. It gives you the option to click and size it back to full size for your viewing pleasure. If you have an issue where this is not happening, then try another browser, or your browser settings for text formatting. The only time I have an issue as described where text is over pictures, or out of place is because the browser is setup wrong, or the browser doesn’t support what is being displayed (for instance a program I work with at work need IE to display properly as it was not written for Firefox or Chrome and does not support it’s structure, photobucket does NOT have this issue though!)
Bandwidth is not as big an issue when linking the photo, no matter how big or small it is. You are hot linking the photo, the forums are not hosting the linked picture.
It’s also a bit ridiculous to demand everyone follow your photo hosting and linking directions, but then demand that people who like to read intelligible english to quit whining when someone’s posts make no sense. I won’t call people out for spelling horrible, but this is the internet, you have plenty of time to sit back and proof read what you wrote before hitting “post”. This isn’t a race to see who can post first, aside from language barriers from foreign countries, horrible spelling and grammar should be frowned upon when interacting with the public, even if from behind the computer screen. Unfortunate as it is, you are judged by it.
Once you reduce or compress the size of your image the data is lost forever. If you make it big again there will be a significant reduction in quality. The only way to avoid it is to make a copy and then reduce just the copy. Of course that means that you will INCREASE, not decrease the space it takes up in your computer.
Let me get this straight. I should post little tiny photos so people with slow connections don’t have to wait? My download speed is 1 mbps which is very slow for cable and it does take sometimes up to 15 seconds for a large photo to load. I don’t complain about it or tell them they to upload smaller photos. I just go to another tab and look at what’s there while the photo loads. The photos I load are large on my hard drive but when they get uploaded to Photobucket they are re-sized to just a hair under 640 x 480. If that’s not small enough I’m sorry but they’ll not get any smaller. I terminated my membership on other forums because they demanded postage stamp size photos. I don’t play that game.
I post the largest size allowable in photobucket. I subscribed so the storage is unlimited. When you upload your pic photobucket keeps 2 copies. The original size and a “web” size. When you post a link it’s the web size that shows up and keeps things fast. If you want an original or larger size copy you can go to photobucket and select download and get the larger pic.
Ok you save file “X” as a “Portable Network Graphics” (*.png) file. Making it 316.1 kb
You then save the same file, file “X” as a "jpeg - jfif Compliant (*.jpeg, *.jfif, *.jpeg) file.
You have not changed any other settings.
The file size has gone from 316.1(kb) as a png file to 92.5 (kb) as a jpg file.
Now do you understand how simply changing the file format reduces the file size. And as far as losing data, I say that we are not CSI looking for something in the pictures that well save someone.
BUT, if you wish save your file as you like. It’s your space to use as you see fit. As for me if I can not make out your picture because you posted it as a png I will simply move along. And offer you no help at all.
Johnny, You seem to have issues with trivial things…
I was not aware that there were “correct” file formats to save in? Please enlighten me to somewhere where it states pictures/images have to be saved in “jpg”??
Seems to be that you are referring specifically to my picture… so I’ve taken the liberty of removing it and uploading it again as a .jpg so as not to upset you too much.
The reason I saved it in .png in the first place was because it was made in MS Paint and I didn’t want to create a tiny little JPEG that no one could see details of. The only reason I posted it, is because someone ASKED me to.
You said if you see an image that is not saved in a file format you “approve” of then you move along. I suggest you do that and keep your opinions to yourself.
I save all my work in the original size on my 2TB portable HD which cost me $99 ( and thats Australian!), I don’t care how big the file is. As has been pointed out, Photobucket is unlimited, so again I don’t care what size I upload it in.
Could I tell you what brand car to buy, or what brand camera to buy? The right ones to buy are Ford and Canon!!
I have been using a free photo bucket account for some time. I upload most of the time, jpg, once in a while jpeg and occasionally png in large photos. Photo bucket takes care of them. Not a problem. Deal with it.
This thread is much about nothing, just blah, blah, blah. Yes, I am bored also.
I have a Toyota I think that is made in the USA now. I hope that is acceptable.
I think most of my model railroad stuff now comes from China. That ought to cause Rant. Watch your blood pressure though.
