Rich was trying to say that there was a second thread on the front page with the question on how to post pictures.

If it was my forum, I would have done things this way:

  1. When you sign up, you get a welcome message with some common questions and answers

  2. At the top of each forum, I would leave a sticky entitled “How do I ?” also with pointers to common questions and answers

  3. At each users home page on the forum, the same link.

Some frequently asked and answered questions:

  • My issue of the magazine is late or torn, what do I do?
  • I want to post a picture, how do I do it?
  • Can’t type text in edit window - click on compatibility icon in Internet Explorer
  • How do I see the threads I have started?
  • How to quote a post when replying to it?
  • Basic forum manners - some things to do or not do
    And so on and so forth.

And yes - I am aware that there is a link entitled “If you are new to this forum, please read this” at the top of the screen. Doesn’t seem to help much.

Problem is that it is not enough - clearly there are quite a few people who never finds and look at “Forum help” or other FAQ pages. If Kalmbach is serious about making the forums easier to use, they should put the FAQ pages so they are clearly visible no matter where you are in the forums.

But whatever.

I agree with you totally! These common questions come up so often that Kalmbach is doing all newcomers a disservice by not putting the appropriate ‘how to’ information right up front where it is easy to find. Human nature is such that we tend to experiment rather than find out all the details before diving in. It would seem that most newcomers follow the threads right from the start instead of looking for ‘how to’ information which is buried under a subtitle. I don’t think it would be too difficult to provide a ‘pop up’ for newcomers to offer said information, especially since Kalmbach already seems to have perfected the art of getting pop ups past our filters!

I have seen posts from newcomers, as well as individuals who have been participating in the forums for quite some time, asking how to post pictures. I have inflicted my rather long winded explanation on those who have asked many times. http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/p/181001/1981556.aspx#1981556. Kalmbach has an opportunity to step up to the plate in this regard.

To everyone, Stein deserves a great deal of credit for taking the time when I asked the question a few years ago to give me a detailed answer, which the above link is based upon. However, the bottom line is that Stein and others like him are doing the work of the forum hosts. Make no mistake, I am dearly grateful for Kalmbach’s generosity in hosting these forums. However, we all know that they are doing this to promote their business, so why not make it easier for newcomers to make full use of the forums?

Just because some of us have been on the Trains.com/forums for years, and have answered the same question over and over, does not mean that everyone has seen the answers umpteen times. This is what the Forum is for! To Post pictures on the forum, you must first place the digital photo in a Host (ie. Photobucket), which is free. Once you have established an account with Photobucket, you establish and Album into which you will download photos from your digital camera, or diagrams from a scanner. Below each photo you will see several options. You click on the IMG option. Momentarily, the word " Copied" will appear, which indicates that that photo has been copied to a clipboard in your computer. I have to click on “Edit” and scroll down to “Copy”, and click on it. Go to the Thread where you wish to place the photo. Click on “Reply”., if you desire to add text . Type in your text message, and then go to Edit and click on Paste, (or ctrlV) and the lengthy photo code will appear. Scroll down to Post and click on it. Your text and photo will soon appear at the end of the Thread. If you wish to correct typos, add text, or other Photos, click on “More” and then on “Ediit” (in the square) Don’t forget the rePost you corrected message and photo/s. Bob Hahn
