Postwar Lionel 2353 SF deisel horn

I have a nice postwar set of AA 2353’s. They run great, however when the horn is activated, it will not shutt off. I have heard that it could the horn relay. I was wondering if there was a step by step process with pictures, on how to clean or repair??

Thanks,

Joe

The horn solenoid/relay armature plate is hanging up(literally). There might be some dirt or a slight burr in the area of the armature pivot. If you take the shell off and re-create the problem, you can probably fix it intuitively - some aerosol contact cleaner(CRC, eg.) on the pivot & points usually works to get the plate to drop off the contacts when the DC power(whistle control) is cut off.

In very unusual situations, the transformer can be the culprit. Try the relay first.

It is not uncommon for the horn-relay armature to stick to the pole from residual magnetism if it makes close contact with it. An easy fix is to put a little bit of masking tape between them, to separate them just a smidgen.
