Postwar passenger sets - which locos?

I’d like to get some postwar passenger cars and wondering what locos they would have been combined with. Some of the cars I’m looking for are plastic streamlined 242X or 243X, or sheet metal 244X/644X.

thanks, Don

A quick glance through the Standard Catalog of Lionel Train Sets, by David Doyle.

Sheetmetal 2440 series: 1666, 224, 2025.

Sheetmetal 6440 series: 2026.

Both of the above are the two-tone green passengers cars.

I have a pre war passenger set of 2640’s, two 2640 passenger cars and one 2641 observation car in tin plate with a 224E steam loco.

For post war Lionel dropped the E from the 224 steam loco(same number for a post war diesel), so I would guess that a 224 steam loco would be a good one to use. The 224 says O gauge on the bottom but will run on 027 curve tracks, the 224 was used in a lot of sets and should be rather easy to find.

In 1952, the 2056 pulled a set of 4 all silver 2400 plastic streamliners behind a 2046 whistle tender. It was a one-year-only set and the only set to include the 2429 car that year. The other cars were the 2421, 2422, 2423. We just happen to have this set!
