Postwar Tender whistle remains on

Hi. I have a few postwar whistle tenders one of which remains whistling even after the transformer whistle lever (1033) is released. This has just begun happening in the last few weeks. It seems the relay armature will not immediately fall back out of contact when the lever is released. I would appreciate any help in analyzing the problem and offering a solution. Thanks.

It sounds like the core of the electromagnet in the whistle relay has developed a little “permanent” magnetism.

Make sure there is no old oil/grease acting like stickum between the magnet and the armature.

If that fails, try inserting a layer or two of masking tape to separate the armature from the end of the magnet just a bit.

Thanks for the reply bf. I used a thin piece of cloth saturated with goo gone to clean the top of the armature and bottom of the magnet area as thoroughly as possible. This seems to have done the trick as the whistle has been acting properly the last few hours. I will also keep your other suggestion in mind if it becomes necessary. Thanks again.
