I am currently in the process of cleaning several postwar Lionel cars. How do you detach the trucks from the frames? I can’t figure out an easy way to remove the U-clip holding them on. I am worried that if I force it, the pin will break. Any ideas?

The easiest thing that I’ve found to do is to take a scredriver to the back and push as hard as I possibly can. In some instances, it’s necessary to spread the front of the clip as well.
When putting them back on, slip the clip over the pin, and squeeze the sides together using a pair of pliers. Even better, if at all possible, replace them with “E” clips, which don’t have to be bent out of shape to be installed and removed.
I use a pair of mini pliers. Place one jaw on the side of the clip that opens bridging both sides and the other on the pin. Same idea as using a screw driver but you don’t have to worry about the tool flying off.

I broke down and bought a cheap set of C-clip pliers at the flea market a few years back. They’ve come in handy for a few non-train projects, also.
They’re only good for a couple of removals, unfortunately. Ben is right: Replace them with E clips when they break.
