powder dye

many years ago (25) I bought several colors of powdered dye (raw & burnt umber, sienna, green, ect.) to mix with hydrocal, plaster & Sculptamold. I have not been able to find in the LHS near me. is it still available and where can I find it.

Thanks FRH

google plaster pigment.

Either that or go to your local builders’ supply store and ask if they have masonry dye in powdered form.

I think dry tempera should work. It’s often used with zip texturing. Michael’s used to carry it but not any more apparently. You can order it from Dick Blick.

Joe Fugate has some color recipes in one of his issues of MRH.

Steve:

Just a word of caution about using tempera to colour masonary setting compounds. Tempera will interfere with the ability of some compounds to set properly. I tried to use some leftover powdered tempura to tint a concrete bird bath that I was pouring and it left me with a green mushy mess.

Perhaps best to test a small sample before mixing a full batch.
