I was told that the MTH z4000 was the best choice for smooth engine control is this correct? Buying parts before I build. All inputs welcomed.

I’m with Frank on the price point. At $460, it darn well better be good.
I’ve heard that people like the z4000 and that it’s a solid performer. However, not personally owning one, and looking at it, I have to ask myself how much of that $460 goes to the pretty case and controls? I’m admittedly a bit of a minimalist and a pair of simple handheld PWM throttles suit my needs fine. (and is waaaay cheaper than $460).

Is 15 volts at 12 amps. If you need more than this, your next stop is
Rotary Converter:
600 v dc output. ROAR!
I do have to mention though, that that power supply was almost certainly way more then $100 new.
Surplus is fun, if you know what you are doing.
