Heard the news this morning that there is a crak in Prado Dam and local residents have been evacuated. They didn’t say whether the BNSF main line was closed or not.
Last time I checked before I went to work this morning at 9:30am I saw a Stacker rolling under the Hiway 35 Bridge.
They have not closed the freeway either so the threat cant be that great. I heard on the news that theres no real threat of the dam breaking, but that there is seepage at the base and that they were releasing water as fast as they thought safe, and that it was that drainage they were afraid would overflow the riverbanks and flood the communities. It will take about 5 days to get the resevoir back down to a safe level. There was some talk about the possibility of the dam breaking a couple years ago, apparently they found an active fault under the dam so it didnt surprise me that they discovered a leak in it.
Is it “Chinatown” ?
(Sure would hope that any errors would be on the side of caution).
…What is the significance of this above mentioned dam…Is it large…and is it near a community, etc…Has it been in the news before…Give us a bit of background of it.
I’ll join in that request.
Its a flood control basin dam that basicly bottles the Santa Ana river watershed behind this dam. The Santa Ana watershed covers 100s of square miles from the mountains and valleys from Claremont, San Bernardino Redlands, Riverside, and Norco. Without the dam the full flooding force of the river would inundate almost all of Orange County south of Yorba Linda all the way to Newport Beach. The dam was built back in the 50’s at the head of a canyon the river flows thru between the flatlands of Chino and Orange to control the force of the river, the BNSF mainline out of LA goes from Fullerton out thru the canyon onto Riverside.
Theres a Golf Course and a Trailer Park near the dam but downstream the Idiots we call developers built homes right up to the riverbanks, those are the ones being evecuated.
Very LARGE water storage dam and lake in the LA metro area between Corona and Fullerton on the BNSF 2MT Transcon that feeds the Santa Ana River. The spillway is plainly visible from Amtrak and the Commuter lines [Military helicopters that land on it look like toys]and the 91/Riverside Freeway. If this were to go right now, LA would be severed railwise from the rest of the US as the former UP & SP main lines are already chewed-up on the other side of the dam in the Inland Empire.(SD&AE to San Diego to LA is hardly a viable option)
Dont think so…the video I saw I didnt see someone looking like Jack being washed down the riverbanks…[;)]
Is that even operable? I know there was some talk about them reopening the collapsed tunnel, but I havent heard a peek about the complete route from SD to Imperial Valley being operable.[?]
From one of the other threads, apparently it is. My assumption, based on observation and conversation with folks that have seen it recently, is that the east end of that line is in poor shape and would not meet Class 1 specifications and it gets worse, the further east you go towards Plaster City. And if SanJuanCap/Laguna Nigel/Santa Ana is washed out, the issue is moot.
There just Damn lucky that the Dam “Did not” Break!
…Yes, I’ve now seen the news reports on the dam situation since I’ve asked the above questions… along with video…It really does appear quite large…Lots of water being dumped out of it now.
What? - No good little Dutch boys around when you need one?[:o)][:o)][:o)]
Did you hear about the lady who went to the dam to get some dam water and the dam keeper told her she could not have any dam water so she told the dam keeper to keep his dam water!

And I am sure that the conversation was civil, orderly and beyond any question of dirty water from the dam [swg]
