Pre-Amtrak passenger trains

Why would a train have passenger cars between the engines and head-end (express or baggage) cars? I am watching a Pentrex video and they show a few trains with 1-4 car in front of or mixed with head-end cars. Could these cars being ferried?

Hi Nile,

Reference the thread about “Deadhead” employees AND equipment posted earlier on this forum.

Lots of railroads used deadhead moves to ferry equipment for many reasons. NYC had a big car shop in Beech Grove, IN and any time equipment needed repairs the cars had to be deadheaded there.

Sometimes a big event like the Army Navy game or the New York Automobile show or a Shriner’s Convention would require special trains and the equipment would have to be deadheaded to the originating terminal for make-up several days ahead of departure. This equipment sometimes would have to come from many areas of the railroad and would, of course, require deadhead moves both before and after the event.

Hope this helps, Ed

It probably made switching easier.
