Preemptive Strike--April MR

Dear fellow forum members’,

As the April issue of Model Railroader will be arriving in the mail anyday now,

Please, I’m begging you, keep the April fools’ item to yourself,

at least for a while, say March 9th, which is the average day issue hits the newsstand.

Every year it seem that someone has to blab and give it away, spoiling it for everyone else days before most people even get to see the issue.

Revel in the knowledge that you know something that others do not, and take pride in being able to keep a secret.

Too late because they put it right on the front page of the web site. If you have a shortcut right to the forums then you haven’t seen it, so keep jumping right to the forums. But since I usually hit the MR front page first, I’ve already seen it.

Minor rant, its great we get extra content for being subscribers, but I think they should keep stuff for the latest issue off until newstand date, which is usually after most mail subscribers receive their issues.

Gee, if that is the worst problem that I will encounter today or tomorrow, I am grateful and happy.

I can think of hundreds of things that are far more important to worry about than a stupid April Fools joke.

I can think of hundreds of things that are far more important to worry about than model trains, but isn’t that the point of the hobby, to get away from those hundreds of things just for a little while? MR’s April Fools joke, sometimes lame and sometimes quite funny, is just another part of the hobby, and I will be happy to keep mum if that helps others enjoy it more.

I agree with the OP, and to carry it even further I wish people would not reveal the contents of any part of the mag til about a week after everyone has gotten theirs. It seems to diminish the value of a magazine wqhen the surprise factor is gone.We all like the new ,new thing when we pay the new price.

The old cartoons years ago where MUCH funnier than any of these April Fool’s gags in recent years.

April fool jokes are part of our culture - a mild irritation at worst and a glorious bit of fun by the originator of the joke. But it’s over in seconds and that’s April Fools day over for another year.

I’m afraid to say that the contents of my next MR don’t need to be a complete mystery or surprise for me to enjoy reading them when the magazine arrives. Sometimes prior knowledge of some article or other hightens the anticipation and makes getting the magazine more enjoyable.

I think you may have just sat down upon a rather large stick. Its understandable. Lighten up.

Ever since I pressurized my basement and took out all the support columns, I always like to get advanced notice on MR’s April fools articles so that I do not make the same mistake. It is hard to sell a house that has collapsed not to mention, the law suits that I am still paying off when I blew out my neighbors plumbing. Peter Smith, Memphis

That was probably the best ever. Great article. Sure allowed for a lot more layout space, those darn columns kept interfering with where I wanted benchwork, and you can only do so many water towers and skyscrapers were definitely out of place for my era and local.
