preserving sound-deadening foam roadbed

I’ve heard all the arguments for and against the WS foam roadbed, but I’ve decided to use it anyway. My benchwork is styrofoam on top of plywood, and I have over half of my foam roadbed glued down already.

My number one concern is loosing the sound-deadening property of the roadbed once the ballast is glued. Would it be possible to give the roadbed a coat of paint to seal it and prevent the glue from penetrating? I’m making up a small test module for this idea, but I wanted to put the question out there first in case someone has already done this and can post the results.

Thanks-
JB

Glue getting on the roadbed is not the problem. when the ballast is all glued together it transmits sound right down into the table. So losing the sound deadening property of the foam is pretty much unavoidable. Thats why I use the cheaper cork. Mainly people choose foam because its easier to lay on long stretches.

OK, I see. Thank you.
So this shouldn’t be a problem on 2" of styrofoam, correct?
The 24’ roll is what sold me on the foam. I think I’ll give it a coat of grey paint regardless - to hide any bare spots in the ballast.

You may want to use a white glue that dries clear and flexible such as Aleene’s tacky glue. (ordinary white glue dries too hard).
