Holyoke, MA predates Pullman as a planned industrial city by at least 30 years. The Holyoke Water Power Company constructed a dam and canal system in the late 1840’s, laid out the streets and provided water power to factories - first textile and later paper - that were located between the parallel canals. The railroad first reached what would become Holyoke in 1845.
