Prince George (ex BC Rail) Facilities Threatened by Fire, photos added

Coming into PG last night from the east, I saw this huge column of black smoke and knew something bad was happening.

Turns out the Canfor plywood plant at the south end of the ex-BC Rail, now CN, yards had caught fire. And the embers from the fire spread up to 2 kms away, starting 2 other fires in the BC Rail industrial complex: a warehouse and a stack of railway ties.

The mill and warehouse are total losses, with 300 now out of work. The ties? Don’t know as the roads are all closed.

I will try and post some photos tomorrow.

That hurts! It is tough enough to keep jobs in the forestry sector with the housing market bust without having the mill burn down. I am sure the odds of rebuilding at this time are slim.

These are from the Prince George plywood plant fire of Monday. Note that although I was in PG at the time, these are not my photos.

This one was taken about 40 minutes after the fire department arrived

This one, 20 minutes after the above

And this one, another 20 minutes after the above

This fire caused considerable collateral damage as well from flying embers. One large warehouse and a pile of railway ties also caught on fire. And they were about 2 kms from the mill.
