private message from new member??

I just received a private message from a new member with two posts asking me where I was in relation to West Springfeid PA…Anything going on here or do I just take it at face value??The poster was nkprailroader.

First of all, it looks like he has no knowledge of US geography.

Looks to me that Pennsylvania is a long way from Idaho, .

I know this myself being an ex-cross country long haul truck driver.

He also posted on Layouts and Layout Building, asking about harbors. Seems like he’s legitimately interested in MR, but maybe not terribly familiar with forums. Ah, to be young again! Once upon a time, I only had one post to my name, too. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear…can you hear the William Tell Overture playing in the background?

Ah yes, whatever did we do before the internet? Oh yea, hung out at the train station or interlock tower bugging all the employees about ourselves and asking endless questions that seemed dumb or stupid or strang to them[:-^]

I would tell him that you are 2261 miles due west of West Springfield, PA.

Sue

OHH YES!!!

William Tell overture playing on the old tube type radio in Dad and Mom’s living room, the Lionel train running around the Christmas tree, listening to “The Lone Ranger” or "Hopalong Cassidy "

or Jimmy Stewart as “The Six Gun”.

And the radio wasn’t FM stereo either, that didn’t come until the early to mid 1960’s.

Dad’s radio had a recorder in it, and it had “magnetic wire” it recorded on.

Remember those?

This was before we had a televison!!!

And when we finally got a TV , we had a huge choice of 3 local TV stations, and they signed off about 9 or 10 pm at night!

No VCR’s, No DVD’s, how did we ever manage without cable Tv and all night TV?

And no late all night radio talk shows?

This after spending the late afternoon at the Baker Street train depot in Fort wayne Indiana as Dad’s Pennsylvania RR freight came rolling in from Chicago, or Crestline Ohio, being pulled by a K4, and sometimes a T1 duplex.

What GREAT and WONDERFUL memories!!!

Actually once riding on the famed “Broadway Limited” with Dad coming back from Chicago, and out the window of the observation car , we watched as the New York Central " 20th Century Limited" ran alongside on a parallel track, as steam poured back over the tops of both trains.Employees of both railraods and their familes had been on an excursion to Chicago to see Santa Claus and visit several sites in Chicago, see some of the big downtown

About six months ago, I signed on to 2guys for the first time. I didn’t return for a few weeks, and when I did, someone had sent me a pm asking, “Wanna chat?”

Umm, not really,…thanks.

OK, this on is a stretch, but stay with me, OK?

In India, the name “Tonto” is apparantly a real name. Last year, a young engineer with that name, from the aforementioned subcontinent, showed up at work as a new hire. He and I got along quite well, and he has shown quite an aptitude for our radar systems and the kind of systems integration work that we do.

So, now I’ve got a faithful Indian companion named Tonto. Hi Yo Silver, away! didda dum didda dum didda dum da dum…

Tonto? Tonto? I thought he was in Toronto teaching Esparanto.[:P] I think we need to end this thread pronto.[C):-)]

P.S. you said stay with you.

[#wstupid][{(-_-)}][:D][C):-)][swg][bow][:-^][sigh]

Hysterical!!!

If you want to kill this thread, you’ll have to shoot it with a silver bullet!

I used to do that with my grandfather and mother! That’s where I learned a good bit of my stuff. [C):-)]

[#ditto]used to hang out at the station in my home town. the tower op used to have me run to KFC to get him lunch, then hang out in the tower. Wasn’t long before I was operating it while he napped. Just had to wake him when someone called on the phone or radio. I even strung out the orders. If it was a crew coming he trusted I go and hand them up on the pole. Let me tell ya, thats ALOT harder than it looks. I missed the caboose on my first try and they had to back up to get them so they wouldn’t have to call the yard up the line to get copies. Explaining that woulda got him in trouble. To bad that was the eighties, a decade earlier and it woulda been considered on the job training and probably gotten a job[sigh]
