Problem with MTH smoke unit

The fan in the smoke unit is not turning as fast as it should to blow the smoke out of the stack. I think I overfilled the smoke unit and oil went inside the chamber where the fan is. I think the fan is slipping on the shaft of the little motor, because I could stick a flat blade screwdriver on the fan while it’s spinning and it just stops, but the motor still runs fine. Is there any way I could fix it, remove the oil?

Number 1, don’t stick screw driver on it again. Will only make it worse. Clean it and get all oil off. IF the fan will come off the shaft, pull it off. Clean it good and the shaft. Put super glue or one of the Zaps on it. Hope that holds.

I had some issues with my mth smokme unit as well. I opened it up and it seamed that the same thing was happening but after fluffing up the wick and making sure that the air cut out isn’t blocked it smoked excellent. It’s worth a try since you already have the unit open.

The fan wont slip off the shaft. I might have to save up some money and let MTH fix it. It was working fine before I put it up on a shelf and didn’t run it for a few weeks, or maybe a month.

Get a replacment and do it yourself. Save this one and fix it later. I think TAS has some MTH smoke units if MTH parts are hard to get.

What’s TAS? It seems like the unit would be easy to replace, since it just plugs in.

TAS is Train America Studios , I had an issue with a Lionel smoke uni so I set them an email and they responded the same day with a part number and whether or not they had it in stock. The unit was less than 30 dollars and it is simple to install. I would suggest getting in touch with them.

Thank you. Sorry for all the dumb questions.

The only “dumb” question is the one that never gets asked.
