Progress

The Army has had me busy lately and the work is slow. I have the bench work now complete and do not plan to change again. I have a stupid question that hopefully some of you will be able to answer. The first part of my layout will be centered around coal loading operations. I am trying to develope a track plan and find it hard to know if I have room for my buildings. I plan to use a Walthers New River Mining for the first building. The tracks running under the tipples is what is killing me.

Do I need to buy the building and plan my track plan or do you guys have a work around?

Hello Ferguson, While I find it handy to have at least a kit if not a completed structure on hand when laying out industry tracks, the Walthers HO catalog does have a plan view or footprint drawing for the New River Mining Co. (and for all its other structures too). The drawing includes track center lines so you can see how to space your tracks. See page 461 of the 2006 catalog. Good luck with your layout, Andy

You know I have looked at the a 100 times and never noticed the size diagram before. Thanks for the quick reply.

I have found that a couple of the kits I planned to use were just too large for the area and distroyed all the perspective. There have been several posts about making a kit smaller by cutting part of it off. I plan to try some of this. A great kit that is too large for the railroad will make things look funny. I could not find a bridge large enough, but all the mines look too large. I have a stone cutting building that will be fine, I hope, if I just cut 1/3 off and build the rest.
