I am in need of help from my Forum friends especially those who model the 1970s.
I have a two floor interior designed for a small restaurant for my 70s era layout. I will be using my new 3D printer to make the parts. I have yellow, black, gray, dark brown, and a spring green available for them. (See attached photos for actual colors.) The walls and top floor will be the brown and the bottom floor and side stairs will be gray to represent concrete. There will also be a yellow railing upstairs.
However, I have no idea what color to make the tables and chairs. Given that I’m told the 70s had garish colors, what color would be the best? (I’m leaning the brown but I need another opinion.) I am not quite old enough to remember the colors of the era. I can split the print file for the table and chairs up if multiple colors are suggested.
When I think back to the 1970s (my teen years), the most color scheme that most comes to mind is “Harvest Gold and Avacado Green”. However, color mixes using Red, Orange, Brown and Yellow were big too.
Have it YOUR WAY!
I think I will do the tables in brown and the chairs in yellow and I’d probably be close.
Thank you for the assistance.
When I met my wife in the 1970s, her apartment had orange shag carpeting and lime green appliances and bathroom fixtures. At the time, I thought she had the height of modern apartment living.
Now when we look back at photos of the apartment and our clothes, the first thing we think is, “What in the world were we thinking?” I honestly hope late 60s - early 70s colors and styles never come back. There were terrible.
Yep, our bathroom shower stall tiles were Yellow and Green, and the family room carpet was Orange shag.
Here ya go, authentic colors of the 1970’s:
I remember tables in restaurants being a dark, dark brown wood with chairs often having black vinyl pads on kinda brassy metal frames. Usually with boysenberry syrup stains if you were at IHOP ![]()
Also don’t forget tiki style.
Heh, no one thought to link to Lileks (Interior Discretions)?
Lilek’s site is actually an interesting site with lots of kitschy topics and images, alas it is organized along the lines of the old text based computer games " You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike". There is info on diner interiors which would be useful to you, which to be honest seem to resurface randomly -
Try this address to start LILEKS (James) :: 60s :: Chain Store Age)
And this Lileks link as well, potentially more useful: LILEKS (James) :: Coffee & Chrome
That turquoise color would probably not be off by much.
But I wouldn’t worry too much about getting the colors just right. Those who weren’t around then won’t care if they are not right, and those of us who were around won’t be able to remember so… ![]()
If you’re referring to the far left roll in the picture of the four rolls, that’s actually marketed as green. I actually had thought about using that as well for some chairs but wasn’t sure. I can easily split the chair and table file to allow for the three colors. (I still haven’t figured out how to combine everything into one file for multiple colors.)
As for getting the colors right, I’m one of these people that wants to have everything as close as possible to what might have been.
Hmmm, wonder if that’s James R Lileks? Wrote for the Minnesota Daily (U of MN paper) when I/we were there, then went on to a long career in journalism.
They are coming back just a little muted. Summer Mint Green instead of lime green.

That’s not good news to me!
You could always watch some old episodes of the Brady Bunch for ideas. Or better yet, head to your local Denny’s - I doubt they’ve changed any since the 70’s.
LOL
Our local restaurants were updated about 15 years ago but many are closing because the younger generations don’t hang out in restaurants and coffee shops the way their ancestors did. The closest one to me went pick up only before it shut down. In the 80’s it was always packed with teenagers, especially on Friday night since it was next to both a large shopping mall and the local high school football stadium that served at least a dozen area schools.
For anyone curious, here’s what the chairs look like in the green and yellow.
I haven’t printed the tables as of yet. Those will be printed sometime on Tuesday. The upper floor is also part of that file. The bottom floor walls hopefully will be printed then as well.
Garish colors = 1970s for sure! However, there was also a “natural” movement back then, so say the tabletops might have been natural wood with the woodgrain showing.
But the “natural wood” was vinyl some times. ![]()
Formica?
