Proper extra weight for a Walthers 89' Auto Rack

Hey all,
It’s been a while since I have worked on one of these, and I really don’t feel like going through and opening up one of my other finished autoracks. How much extra weight is needed to add on a Walther’s 89’ autorack? I have a C&O/Chessie car that I plan to get started on today. Thanks again for the advice all!

And you were hoping that one of us would? [:D]

It’s an almost impossible question to answer from here… But, if you have a completed one you’re already happy with, weigh it, then when your new one is nearing completion, weigh that + it’s parts needed to complete it and, bingo! The difference is the weight that you need to add!

Hi John,

I put about a half dozen of these together years ago, and if I remember right, I doubled the weight by putting the second one inside the car. I glued a piece of brass inside to increase the weight, about as heavy as the weight they give you for each car.

For car weight questions, refer to NMRA RP20.1. You can find this on the NMRA website www.nmra.org On the left column you’ll see the link for standards and recommended practices (where the “RP” comes from). There’s a lot of great info for the modeler in all scales.
