I have a Bli hudson 4-6-4 for the nyc. It ran a little jerky so I tried to clean the wheels only to have the wheels spin and run out of quarter. How do I properly quarter the hudson? Could you show pics of the wheel weights relative to each other. I have concluded that the rear wheel can be turned on the bearing and have been fussing with it now for a few days but as close as I get the driver rods look a little off.
Yes, the NWSL Quartering Tool works, but there is still the question of why the wheel was so loose that it turned. You have to deal with the loose axle or it will lose quarter again and again until the wheel just falls off. Send it to BLI for service. They will do it right and it may be cheaper than buying the NWSL tool. Better also to have BLI do it because they will stand behind their work
I was tired of the jerky and wobbling steamers I owned. I bought the NWSL quarterer and a wheel puller. I took all my locos apart and checked quarter and side rods. I used a dab of Loctight thread lock when pressing the wheels back on. Lay both side rods on top of each other and make darn sure every hole lines up perfectly. If one hole is even off by a couple thousandth of an inch the quarter will be ineffective.
Mike, from what I just read this more than likely will not be any help. But, I can send you a picture of my BLI Hudson. My self, I would buy the tool instead of sending it back to BLI if you have other steamers. As much as I like BLI and PCM, if you run them there going to break.
Only BLI / PCM Steamer I have that I have not repaired is a Heavy Mike, and it is on the RIP track. No tender power pick up.
Getting ready to tear apart my PCM Big Boy again Cuda Ken
yeah ken please send the pic I would appreciate it. The wheels are tight and it takes a bit of force to get them to spin. It was my fault to begin with using too much pressure when cleaning the wheels with the paper towel on the track trick. It runs fairly good now still has a little wobble and a little noise. I noticed in certain attempts the motor noise was less( should have stopped while I was ahead I know but I have a bit of an anal disorder);.
Thanks Ken for bumping I have been busy all week getting ready for a catering gig this weekend. Supposed to have 2 helpers but I have ended up doing the majority of the work since I am the only one with out a steady job.
If you have the pic handy of the hudson I would appreciate it greatly.
I did happen to find 2 cracks in the tire tread or rim of the drivers that when lined up together seem to get things pretty darn close to being right. Does yours have these cracks and were they used by bli to get things lined up?
Mike, off to sleep so I can do a lot of grilling tomorrow.
