Proto 2000 0-8-0

Hello we are Army and have just moved to a new house and during the move I had a Proto 2000 0-8-0 from the first run when Life Like still made them, break and Walthers does not have any parts for them

I have looked on Ebay for some months now and nothing has showed up on there so I could take the parts from it and fix the on I have. So I was wondering if any body have any that they would like to sell so I could fix the one I have?

I’d check again, you’ll likely find examples from the first runs of Life-Like’s 0-8-0. I myself just bought one off of eBay. I didn’t see parts, but complete models should be on there, with one of them you can cannibalize the two and have a working model plus many neat parts for a roundhouse scene, scrapyard or other scenes where old steam engine parts would be seen. Also, check with your LHS many will fix train models for a nominal fee.

yeah, only problem is you are going to need several of them if you expect them to do any work, i have one and all it is good for is switching the caboose track and car shop. i won’t pull a sick stripper off a dance pole. on the other hand, that should make them show up on ebay and hoyardsale etc. when their owners find out just how weak they are. granted, they are well detailed little engines but looks don’t move box cars.

Well the original LL P2K 0-8-0 was my main switcher at Granville Junction and could pull a 12 car cut with ease.

perhaps i should not be so hasty to disparage a product from one of this forums main advertisers and i take no issue with someone who accepts pulling 12 cars cuts as part of a normal day’s work for their yard engine.

maybe i just have too much basement. at any rate my drill job requires the power and traction to move at least 30 cars at one time (unless you want to walk down and make 2 extra cuts on the track you are switching. the lead is on a slight grade and shoving 45 cars down into the yard bowl is not unheard of in my sick little world.

i just hate to risk the detail on that proto 0-8-0 to add more weigh and for my part, snot belongs in a tissue.

only engines i can use on my drill track job are kato nw-2’s (just barely do the job) a NJ Custom Brass 0-8-0 and a brass NYC 0-10-0. (I put enough lead in the two brass engines to start a wheel weight shortage in central illinois.) i can rotate an atlas GP-7 out of the road pool now and then for this work and they do a fine job.

the point i was trying to get across to the original poster was that these engines should start showing up on the sale and auction sites pretty soon if not already. they will go cheap when they do if he shops around a bit.

back to the 12 car cuts, away put your weapon-i mean you no harm. do you make up and run 12 cars road trains also? railroads learned early on that yard power must be able to at least move any size train the railroad chooses to run. even if it is only at walking speed for a mile or so.

That’s an interesting opinion as mine pull just fine. I have one older one without traction tires and one newer one with. The older one (without traction tires) pulls 15 or mor of my freight cars just fine, the one with traction tires pulls twice that. Maybe you need to put some free rolling trucks under your box cars.

Sheldon

well, sheldon, it all comes down to just that. our own seperate opinions. i must admit that i am not a fan of traction tires. no good reason, i just don’t like them. some people do and that is their bag, go with it.

if i have a yard engine that pulled 15 cars and that was it’s limit, i would be extrememly unhappy with it,(see my griping in the earlier post response)

now as for how freely the cars roll, my standard requires them start rolling on their own on a 1/2 % grade. of course that is for starters and after they have been in service for a while, they may just tighten up a bit on their own. everything gets truck tuner treatment and i use a minimum car weight of 4 oz. except for mty hoppers.

it could be that my fleet of old blue box and the like are not up to snuff but i also have a lot of P2K stuff that will take off running on a hard sneeze.

once again to the original poster, are you familiar with hoyardsale.com? it is a buy and sell site that is one of the yahoo groups. you join for free and then can offer to sell or buy ho items only just so long as the moderator is ok with your listing. no fees, no bids, just make an offer sell what you have or post a wtb (want to buy ad). i have used it a few times and when it comes to clearing out cheap surplus or finding something i want, i like it much better that e-bay.

My 0-8-0 would pull 12 plus but then on the 12 x 16 foot GER all I could manage was 16 car plus van freights. So I was happy with 12 cars as cuts rarely exceeded that. BTW, the yard lead was , in fact, the branch main track and it was on a descending grade away from the yard. Therefore, after pulling the 12 car cut, the 0-8-0 then had to shove it up grade to get it back onto another yard track.

Not sure what the grade was as the GER is now in the dumpster and I never kept track of things like grades once I’d built them. Was probably between one and two percent erring to-wards two percent I’d imagine.

Hopefully, on the next GER, I get to run longer freights. I envy your 30 car freight. [sigh]

BTW, I get no “quote” option when posting. Anyone got any idea why?

I’ve got four of Proto’s 0-8-0’s and the newer release one’s will EASILY pull 20 40’ boxcars and a coboose. I added Bullfrog snot to my only first run version and it to will EASILY pull the same amount. I’ve never tried any more because that’s all I have for steam era boxcars, oh and by the way, they are all Kadee and Intermountain cars so they got some weight to them.

griz, When I wrote my original post I was working from memory and stayed conservative. My layout is currently in a rebuilding phase so both my Proto 0-8-0’s were put away. I got them out and tested them with my fleet of 50’ piggyback cars. These are modified Athearn 50’ flats with two vans, modified to be more correct for an early piggyback car. They have Kadee sprung trucks with Intermountain wheels and each weighs 4.3 oz, a little more than the average 40’ box car. I have over

Well guys thanks for the post, but that does not help me with looking for parts for this fine loco.

What parts do you need? I have at least 4 of these sitting around somewhere. But I found many of the parts are compatible with the 0-6-0 including the tender pick ups.

Well I would need a complete running gear set witch has the cylinders, the side rodes and wheels.

I will see if I can get a picture up if you do not know what i’m talking about because it is hard to describe what it is I need.[:$]

Sorry about all the time that has passed but here are the picture I said I would post.
