Proto 2000 2-8-0

I found a Proto 2000 2-8-0 and a 0-6-0 for $200 for the both of them.
now i would like to know how they run and how detailed they are before i spend $200 witch is all i have.

Ben

Ben,

Where did you find the deal? ebay? A discounted new 0-6-0 would run you around $150. So…$200 for both sounds like a terrific deal. You still need to be wary. Do you know why the person is selling them both so cheap?

Proto 2000 steamers and diesels are usually beautifully detailed. They should run fine but won’t pull a lot of cars.

Tom

I’m showing my ignorance here, but I did not know that P2K produced a 2-8-0! I knew that SPectrum has an excellent reputation for its 2-8-0.

I guess I really haven’t “seen it all”! [%-)]

Make sure they are PK2’s and not Life Like’s

Ken.

Duh!?! [%-)] My oversight. I believe Crandell is correct. Proto 2000 doesn’t make a 2-8-0 but Bachmann Spectrum does. Ken’s warning is warranted, as well. Be sure that the 0-6-0 is really a Proto 2000 locomotive and not one of their cheaper versions Bi-i-i-i-i-i-i-ig difference!

Tom

I see they make an 0-8-0 latest MR mag page 81 but not in the shops yet.

Ken.

P2K does not make a 2-8-0, their 0-6-0 runs like a watch, but on the other hand the 0-8-0 is not has good. The 0-8-0 was out first,it came out about 4 yrs ago, ther problem with it is that it has no pick-ups in the tender. There is alot of stalling on switches. They fixed the problem on the 0-6-0. I have 2 0-8-0’s i contacted Lifelike to see if i could get the pick-ups from the 0-6-0 No they don’t carry any parts! (this is the main thing i want to see come out of Walthers take over of Proto,to have parts in stock!!!) But they did tell me at LifeLike when i called that there is a guy in Canada that makes a kit to put the pick-ups in the 0-8-0s tender. Call lifelikes 800 num. and they will give you this number to buy the kit. I never have gotten around to doing it myself. HZRMac the ones you saw in MR where the new run of 0-8-0s coming soon.

Dave,

Supposedly LL addressed the pick up problem on the newer 0-8-0s (with sound) that are coming out. At least that is what I heard.

Tom

The new 0-8-0 is reported to have a traction tire too which will increase it’s pulling power. My P2K 0-8-0 runs pretty good.

Also if that 2-8-0 is the Bachmann Spectrum it is a sweek little steamer.

Bob DeWoody

well i am not sure about the 2-8-0 but i know for a fact that the 0-6-0 is a proto, and he is going to O scale so he selling his brand new HO stuff.

Ben

if you’re getting a p2k 0-6-0 and a spectrum 2-8-0 it’s an ok price . i see an 0-6-0 on ebay with a buy-it-now price of $124 (no shipping price listed) and a 2-8-0 for a buy-it-now of $63.99 + $8.50 shipping . assuming the shipping is the same (bad idea but this is just an example) for the 0-6-0 the total is $204.99 .

these are both new-in-box auctions , if the ones you’re looking at are used you should ask for a discount .
