Proto 2000 E6

I am cosidering an AB set of the proto E6. Does anyone have an opinion on this engine in terms of performance and quality? Is there a “Decent” price i should expect to pay? I have seen them as high as 160.00

Thanks

I don’t have one, but I’d like to get one painted as UP’s City of San Francisco. trainworld.com has a powered A and dummy B for only sixty bucks.

Excellent locomotive. But NO WAY should you pay $160. If you can’t find an AB set for under $100, you’re doing something wrong.

Thanks folks!

What era were they used in? They’re fine looking locomotives…

I have a set they are awesome. If you buy some don not run them with other P2K engines. These will drag or pu***he other. (I found that out the hard way.)
I would order from Trainworld. Check model railroader. They have them for like 40 +7.95 for shipping

IMHO, you can’t go wrong with Proto 2000, no matter what it is. The price differential between dealers, however, makes it wise to carefully shop around. Something else about P2K worth mentioning here is their warranty and customer service. I had a BL-2 that developed an electrical short in one of the trucks, which melted the plastic parts. I telephoned Life Like, expecting to pay for a replacement truck. The lady I spoke to took down my name, address, etc., and said they would send a replacement right away. I asked her what it was going to cost, and she said there was no charge – P2K products all carry a lifetime warranty, and they even paid for the postage to mail the replacement part. That’s what I call a class act, and they certainly earned my loyalty.

UP originally bought E’s in the mid-30’s, and bought E6’s in 1940, and did’t retire any E’s until 1948. Check out http://www.utahrails.net/all-time/all-time-loco-chron-02.htm for more info.

I have a P2K E6 AB with sound…

It’s a fine running machine to say the least.

Trainworld is probably your best bet. And you’ll have it in a couple days.

that looks like an E5 or earlier E-unit, or is it the angle?

I have several E6-A’s and one powered E6-B. They are very good runners and can pull heavy loads. I have one on the layout now and it can pull an 18 car train in which all the cars are weighted to NMRA standards or heavier around 18" radius curves with no problem. On average I paid about $45 for each of them. Two I bought as a set for $65.

I ran a doubled headed E-6’s at K-10 Model Trains and pulled 80 cars with no problem. Both where powered. Rail name has some what to do with there cost. I have yet to repair a Proto Engine I will add.

E-3’s thru E-6’s all had the same slanted nose, E7-8-9’s had the F-unit style bulldog nose.

BTW I don’t have an E-6 but based on the E7 and E8’s I have, I’d assume they’re first rate. IMHO Life-Like GP’s aren’t as good as Atlas ones, but their E units are superb.

(1) It’s an excellent running engine. (2) There have been re-runs - SOME with sound, which makes a difference in price. (3) “Decency” is in the eye of the beholder, and how badly you want it. 4. There doesn’t appear to be any NEW ones in stock, so your $160 price seems to be preowned, so check it out. Is it in a road name you want?

NEW prices seem to START @ $110.

Early releases were DC only, had crummy couplers, and needed detail glued to inside the shell.

My P2K E8 is an excellent running and pulling loco. I paid $50 for mine, new. Mine doesn’t like #4 turnouts, so I suggest #6 or greater.
