Proto 2000 GP7 Problem

I recently tried to buy a Proto GP7 from someone, but when they went to test it (for the first time in a few years) the front axle on the front truck doesn’t work correctly.

Could this be the usual P2k cracked gear problem? If it is, how hard would it be for him to fix?

What exactly is the problem. If it goes “CLUNK” CLUNK"CLUNK" thats a cracked gear, and that is easy to fix. but what does it do?

I have a 2000 that had the clunk made to sound like chugging

When the gears failed on my GP-30s I could hear a tap-tap-tap sound. Real easy to fix. Contact Walthers for free replacement wheelsets. Remove the bottom cover from the truck and the wheelsets drop right in.

I would bet that it is a cracked gear. It takes about 15 seconds to replace it and you can use Athearn gear/wheel sets as well. It seems to be a common problem with old Proto 2000 loco’s.
