Proto 2000 loco repairs

Recently I purchased two used Proto 2000 GP20, and one Proto GP18 locos. All seem to have problems with one of the trucks on each of them. Can anyone tell me how to remove the shells so that I can determine what the problem is, and how to repair them? Also, can anyone provide me a copy of the parts diagrams for these locos by email? Thanks.

You have cracked gears. Give Walthers a call and they should send you free replacement wheel sets.

Thanks. I spoke to the parts department earlier and they told me that since these were purchased used, any parts needed would have to be purchased. I suspect that replacement wheelsets shouldn’t be too expensive. I’ll call for a price tomorrow. Thanks, heaps, for the quick response and helpful information.

If all you need to do is replace the gears/ wheelsets, You don’t have to remove the shell. The bottom truck cover is removed and the whellsets drop out. Just remember to check the guage of the wheelsets prior to installation.

It’s been so long that I removed a shell on these, others will have to fill you in for any future maintainence. I know it would easily come back to me looking at the model, but it escapes me just now.

When you get them, you don’t have to remove the shells. There is a retainer plate on the bottom of the trucks that has to be pried off. Use 2 small screwdrivers & work from both sides. The wheelsets already have the gear installed, so just pull the old ones out & drop the new ones in. Once you are sure the gears are meshed, snap the retainers back on. You should probably replace all of them while you are at it. You may want to bend a thin wire to a hook shape to get under the axle to help pull the old ones out. Jerry
